Dream Felt Merino Wool Roving

Merino Roving is the most readily available wool on the market.  It is sold in long ropes of  combed fibers.  The fibers are long, fine and very soft.  It is commonly used in traditional wet felting and spinners love spinning luxurious yarn from it. 

There are many needle felt artists that use it as well.  It is a good choice for flat needle felting; it comes in a wide array of colors that blend together nearly like paint.  Its use in needle felted tapestries is stunning.  And many sculptural needle felt artists create amazing pieces with merino roving. 

I do not recommend using Merino Roving for the lifelike style of sculptural needle felting that I teach.  The fine, long combed fibers compact together very densely which makes felted sculptures made from Merino very firm.  And as you felt Merino Roving with a felting needle, you will notice grooves or lines appear as those long combed fibers shrink.   It takes a lot more poking to felt all those fine fibers together and even the finest gauge felting needles leave noticeable holes. 

The reason you find Merino Roving here at Felt Alive is because it is my absolute favorite wool to use for hair on dolls.  I also use it in very small quantities for eyes , lips, and shading.
