A Message to Felt Alive Needle Felting Students

Welcome New Needle Felting Friends!  I’m so happy you found your way to my woolly world of Felt Alive and are ready to dive into my tutorials.

I found true creative joy when I first stabbed into the wool back in 2007.  It’s led me on  a path of adventures I could never have imagined and it’s my hope to share this gift with everyone looking for a creative outlet.

Learning how to needle felt will help you connect with your natural artistic abilities. We all have them, some of us just haven’t tuned in to them. I discovered an artist lurking in me – caricature art is something that I had no idea I had talent for until I started needle felting.  It does that for people – brings hidden talents to light!

Needle felting will give you an outlet of pure creativity where something takes over and form arises out of fluff.

Needle felting is a deeply peaceful and joyful experience.  As you’ll see in the videos, the wool wildly entertains me as it takes shape and I find myself giggling out loud throughout the process.

Wool is a very unusual sculpting medium because it is so full of life and that’s what makes my Felt Alive Wool Sculptures seem nearly alive. You’ll soon learn what I mean!

Without any sewing, stuffing, wire armatures, clay or paint; fluffy wool takes form using only barbed felting needles.  All of the effects are achieved using wool including eyes and teeth. Even their clothing and hair! It’s all needle felted wool. Crazy, I know!  Crazy Fun! I’m so excited you are about to experience it with me.

The coolest thing that I’ve discovered about needle felting is that anyone can do it!  It’s really, really, really true!    

Even if you think you aren’t creative, needle felting proves you wrong.

A note about wool and supplies

We started producing these videos over a decade ago and so much has changed. In the videos, I use wool from different suppliers that are no longer in business. In my later videos you’ll see me using Felt Alive Needle Felting Wool. I am sorry to say that we no longer produce our beautiful wool. There are many new needle felting shops who offer quality wool and felting supplies. If you have a favorite, please leave a link in the comments below.

I have been doing some online sleuthing and have put together a list of suppliers that should have what you need if you are learning with Felt Alive Videos.

Outback Fiber: This company has been around a long time and has a good selection of wool and supplies. I use a product called prefelt in my doll making videos for clothing- you can purchase it HERE.   

This shop also has a great selection of merino roving.  I don’t sculpt with it but I use it for hair for my dolls and also in tiny wisps for blush and shading.  This particular product looks FABULOUS and would paint the faces of many, many dolls.  It’s would also make many lovely pairs of needle felted lips.  

They also have some wool batting that is a little coarse and hairy but it looks fun to work with. You might try it for making Pups or Droits in the video tutorials.

Weir Crafts: Another good source – I just cruised through their site for this first time in at least 15 years.  They have a bunch of goodies!  But an essential thing you need is a Foam Felting Pad.

And I see they have core wool!  I haven’t tried theirs but it looks good.  1 lb will go a very long way as you get started.   They also have other kinds of batting that I haven’t tried and they have a nice selection of prefelt, too.

Living Felt: Last but not least, Marie and the gang at Living Felt have helped put needle felting on the map with their supplies, tutorials and commitment. Their MC1 Cross Batts are wonderful. And they actually have nice colors for skin tones that are so hard to find for doll makers. Their core wool is just like the stuff you’ll see in the videos. They have foam felting pads and all kinds of different goodies for needle felting. Perhaps best of all, they have bright white wool. This super-fine batting isn’t what I’d choose for general sculpting but for touches of white like teeth and eyes – this is essential. And a little goes a very long way!
